A few words about using lifting hooks for DL. That's a bad idea and I'll tell you why from experience. If you're pushing your DL as you should be and you have to bail, that's not so easy when you have those hooks locked onto you. With straps, you can just let the weight go.

Don't use hooks for DL.

Most of us have seen videos of people passing out during a deadlift set.

Many of us have actually had it happen to us.

Imagine having a vasovagal response with a loaded bar hooked to your wrists.

I use figure 8 straps when I have to, same problem.

Last year during the run up to the meet part of the reason I fucked my leg up having a seizure doing deficits was going down still being hooked to the bar and then flopping around still being pinned and strapped to it.

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't recommend hooks at all

They have very little advantage over regular straps and add significantly more risk.

Watching video of how to use the straps, it does not seem like they will let go quickly. But I guess it's better than being hooked.

I'd suggest to only use them on your top sets, where you'll need them, so your grip strength continues to improve with the build up sets.

I'm finding my progression on dead lifts is being hindered not because of my body, but because my grip gives out ... Is there a trick or do I just need to wait for my forearms to get bigger?

If you have any interest (and access) to a rock climbing gym, that'll develop grip and forearms very quickly. I started doing that on my off days. It's also surprisingly fun and mentally challenging.
