Walk-in / family doctor recommendations for TRT / hormone replacement therapy in the GTA

I'm 30 years old living in Etobicoke and have the symptoms of low testosterone/hormone imbalance. My father has been on TRT since he was in his 30's for extremely low T and suffered from the exact same symptoms I'm experiencing now. He's been on my case about getting this checked so I finally went to a walk-in clinic and explained this to the doctor and asked to get my blood work done to check for testosterone and hormone levels. He immediately becomes doubtful and goes on about "we can't check for this and this vitamin unless you pay and I already know your test will come back completely normal" (this is not a family doctor, this is a walk-in clinic doctor seeing me for the first time). I explain further the symptoms I'm experiencing and he ends up writing me off for a blood test that checks sugar, some vitamins, mono, lyme disease, west nile virus, basically everything except what I went for. I've been to two other walk-in clinics and it's been the same story, essentially being refused to have my hormone levels checked for some reason.

Does anyone here have experience with this situation? Or does anyone have a doctor that is familiar with HRT or is there a clinic where you can go to get your blood work done without needing a referral from a GP? I have no idea why this is such a hassle, I don't look like a bodybuilder or an athlete by any means so I can't suspect that they think I'm trying to 'abuse' an HRT prescription or something. To be fair I look much younger than 30 but c'mon, I specifically put off bringing up any hormonal issues with a doctor until I was 30 to avoid this situation. Luckily for my dad he never had issues finding a doctor that tested his hormones straight away before putting him on a cocktail of depression medications and other things, but he's in another province so going to his GP isn't really an option for me. I own a car so I'd be willing to travel essentially anywhere in the GTA for a good doctor. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated, it's been a demeaning experience dealing with doctors here and I'm not sure what else I can do. Thanks a ton!

If you can, make an appointment with and Endo or a Urologist. If not, go to your GP. A GP should be able to give you an order for a full metabolic blood panel and then you can go from there.

I had a similar situation w my family doctor, yet agreeing to check my b/w, when it came back, said it was a lil low,so I asked him to help me out,he wanted to prescribe me,the gel,the patch, when my insurance refused to cover it,yet said they would cover, test cyp,& the pins,w an authorization, the doctor said,he didn't feel comfortable with doing that! So I gave up on that, and back to basics,w what I know! everyone I used to be in contact with is now, gone or out of the game,53 yrs old, ready for another try, been off 3yrs, something will work out! Patience,I'm told!

In ontario you have to jump through so many hoops to get to an endo.

Our health system is ****ed up. But. If blood work shows, low t, you should get the referral and hopefully see the specialist within a year.

Lovely, eh?

I know this is an old thread but for anyone in the GTA looking for a good clinic try the Institute of Human Mechanics in Etobicoke - their docs are really understanding and willing to work with you, I spoke to Dr Minhas there. It's a private clinic btw.

When I was first starting TRT years ago the first doctor willing to treat me at 24yrs old was Dr. Jeremy Gilbert at Sunnybrook. He's the only Toronto doctor I can vouch for with experience in TRT and hormone imbalances and wont just stick you on the gel and send you on your way, he was very open to my wanting to learn how to self inject.

From my experience here in Ottawa you can talk to your GP about getting referrals out for specific doctors but you need a darn good reason since you're kinda jumping the line in a way.

whoops. didn't catch the timestamp

No worries brother. I'm just having fun. My doc is a urologist in Barrie Ontario. He absolutely loves prescribing as much testosterone as possible! I'm lucky as 125 mg ew puts me at the upper end of physiological if not a bit above.

Missed this response

I get really good levels from 150mg/wk but have been working with a troublesome Endo in Ottawa since 2016. He only believes in Test monotherapy so no HCG and no AI. I have been on the same protocol since before him so I just use UGL AI and HCG to keep my levels where I feel the best.

Hell, my ENDO doesn't even do full hormone panels when I do bloodwork. No Free T, E2, Prolactin, SBHG. I've been trying to convince him for years that I want to track these variables but he doesn't see a point. I hate doctors sometimes being the gatekeepers for bloodwork.

People make the mistake of thinking an Endo means good at hormones, WRONG! Only way you're getting it done correctly (with a doc) is a TRT clinic. Mainstream docs suck at anabolics, plain and simple.
