newbie on the forums here. I live in NY and it doesn't look like gyms are going to re open for a while and sports stores are all closed.

In response im building a squat rack most likely out of 2x4's drilled together with metal pipes to hold the barbell. I can't post a pic apparently....

Does anyone else have experience in making home gym equipment? any ideas/thoughts are appreciated. thanks.

I'd recommend using 4x4s for the 4 posts. 3.5" screws.

that definitely seems more efficient. My plan for the posts was 3 2x4s drilled together, just to make it easier when tailoring the frame but a 4x4 will be less problematic if I wanted to add something to the sides of the planks.. thanks

N11 is the UG resident MacGyver, do what he says. Little FYI, don't get crazy and need to dump the weight and you could make it out of bamboo.

This one is overkill. I estimate it can handle 3k lbs easily. Look at the pics, note the braces and supports. You can copy it using smaller lumber

I see what your saying, and I like that design. very simple and efficient. Did the bolts for the brackets ever give you issues? besides changing spots for the right height I assume the other holes are.

There are two sets of holes. I never change the height of the hooks because I'm the only one who uses it.
The J hooks are large pieces of angle iron. I used a drill press to drill 1" holes in the back, then I slid long threaded rod into the hole on the angle iron and welded it.

If you dont have a welder You can just use smaller bolts and leave the head on.
Another idea is to use a 2x4 or 4x4 on each side as a rest for the bar. It is already soft and will not hurt the bar. You will be limited to one height, though
