Best advice I was given about buying a safe, is to get one twice the size you think you need.

I think most theft is crime of opportunity. I'd be really surprised to hear that someone I knew got robbed and their safe cut open. It happens, I know, but they have to go in planning to do that. And you're right, it is very doable with those tools.

With safes and security systems, it's all about making things more difficult for thieves to get. None of these things we do can prevent theft, but we can make it harder for them or make it easier to catch them (surveillance).

I've spent a lot of time researching this topic. I'm a little paranoid lol. My house did get robbed one time too. We left a door unlocked. Lessons were learned.

Yes, most gun safes are only fire rated and have thin metal on the outside. It makes them easy to get in to with an axe. They have lots of bolts in the door to give the appearance of security but most can be pryed open. I did months of research before buying this TL-30 safe. The TL-30 rating means the safe is resistant to pressing tools and power tools for 30 minutes, including carbide bits and cutting wheels on saws. Basically, the company that tests the safes has their best two testers try to cut a 6" square hole in the safe. If they can not do it in 30 minutes the safe passes the test. Here is a video.

The safe thing always escaped me. Gun cabinet yes, safe, never understood it.

These days it's got more to do with liability than not. Some bottom feeder breaks in to my place and grabs a gun out of the case and accidentally shoots his dick off before he makes it out the door- I'm liable and paying lawyers, insurance companies and hospitals every last cent to my name. So what if we're bankrupted, homeless, lose kids to DFS and very possibly facing criminal charges for negligence and a 3mil$ civil lawsuit for mental anguish, pain and suffering, yada yada on and on and.on
I was taught, if a thief gets hurt thieving on my property, make damn sure it's a terminal condition. (Not advice, just a sarcastic view)

Laws are necessary.
So is common sense.
We have too much of one and not enough of the other.

Basically, what Bubba said. I like my guns but they are covered in my insurance and can be replaced. I absolutely do not want them to end up in other hands, though.
