Looking to get some kind of hunting rifle. I live in the Midwest and would use it for white tail deer, probably never anything else. I have had tons of guns but when it comes down to hunting I really have no idea what caliber to choose. I’m sure like most anything it comes down to personal preference, just looking for opinions and recommendations.

Ruger Hawkeye, in .308 caliber. Love mine, most accurate rifle I've had. Plus Ruger is a great company to deal with if you ever have a problem with anything from them. They honor their warranties. Can't say enough good things about them.

Most accurate rifle I've ever owned..they have the mossburg in all different calibers and its affordablr...I think a new browning bolt action is gonna run you well over a grand and thats before you buy a scope

Checking out Mossburgs site now. I didn't realize they made handguns, I always thought it was just shotguns and rifles.

What does one of those run?

I didn't pay fer mine, my bosses are all gun nuts given their line of work and hooked me up with one late summer ahead of deer season.

Think they go retail fer round $1500 US.

I'm a big fan of the .270 Winchester cartridge. Very flat ballistics, and low recoil. I hunt pronghorn, elk, and mule deer with a Weatherby Vanguard chambered in .270 win.

Get a bow and you'll never want to pick up a rifle again.

I have a Ruger Precision in .300 PRC. I regularly shoot out to 1200 yards with it. Probably overkill for white tail but I've won a number of matches with it.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I have some to check out now. I hadn’t considered a bow, that would be cool also.

Yeah I will check out gunbroker. I Have used Midwest gun trader quite a bit in the past since I live right on the boarder of MO and KS. Quite a few listings for both states.

I’ve always loved my Remington .300 win mag and 300 blackout for white tail and hogs. Leupold optics.

I don’t think the brand of the rifle matters much as long as the manufacturer is reputable ie: Remington, Tika, Kimber etc.
The cartridge, to me, is more discussable. The round needs to meet the need of what your hunting. Having hunted bear several times, I would not tell you to use a 270 on that hunt. I would say a 300 would do a better job of stopping the bear if things went sideways.
I personally own several rifles by many manufacturers, I prefer Remington, Ruger and T/C. That is just my preference

I guess I kind of read the post wrong lol, your asking about caliber not manufacturer.

Your Midwest whitetails are the biggest sub species of WT in the US... I would say well rounded round that can be used on deer, coyotes, bear etc thing you may hunt over time. My recommendation would be 30’06 or a 7mm Mag. You can buy that ammo almost anywhere, both have good range and they hit hard.
