    Update:

    Lactose free shakes won't help if you eat a whole can of cream of mushroom that contains both heavy cream and whey protein concentrate. Lol

    It sounds like, as you said, the problem was lactose itself. There are very low amounts in most dairy and protein powders so most lactose intolerant people can still handle them. Some guys are allergic or intolerant to the milk proteins themselves, and these guys would have a much harder time with cheese or protein powder.
