    Powerlifting..what brought you to it?

Iv'e been intrigued with the powerlifting aspect of training since I was alittle kid. Reading magazines and watching the "Worlds strongest Man" competitions on tv. The build on some of these guys and there strength amazed me and still does till this day.

I know we have a few powerlifter's here on the boards and just wanted to know what made you take this route. I mean, were you naturally a strong/big person to begin with and just took the next step in training. Could lift excessive weight for your size more-so than you thought possible at the time. I just want to know what lead you to that kind of training and competing.

I was never blessed with height, but strength so I said I might as well move some heavy weights. A power lifting coach approached me then its been a wrap from then on. I love it.

Re: Powerlifting..what brought you to it?

I suck, before injury pushing close to 600 squat in a loose suit 500 raw, pushing close to 500 in a shirt 300's raw and pushing close 600 pull in suit 550 raw.

Started Powerlifting at 40 now 43 haven't competed or trained for a meet in over a year but I train as I can before surgery will be done and haven't lost much strength.

I may to a pull only pre surgery!

    Those are great numbers SF!

Any reasons for you getting into it at 40 if you dont mind me asking? No interest at an earlier age?

    So Bench
    100lbs x 5 reps = 500lbs

    Squat
    100lbs x 5 reps = 500lbs

    TOTAL = 1000lbs ??

Re: Powerlifting..what brought you to it?

In all seriousness I was infatuated with both bodybuilders and power lifters from a young age... based on my build and large frame I look more like a powerlifter but my family has pic of me as a young one doing pose downs in my undies and scowling at everyone (4yrs old). New AVI lol?

Once i actually started lifting I progressed pretty quickly and by 16 had joined the 1000lb club @ my high school (Bench, Squat, Dead Lift) and things kind of went from there. I wouldn't call myself a power lifter at the moment but at one point I would have said this... I am just working on getting back into the swing of things now.

Nice andro. I made the 1000lb club also in my sophmore year in highschool. I dont what the hell happened as of late, haha. I actually won a leg pressing comp in my weight lifting class and recieved one day I could wear reg clothes instead of pt gear. Haha, the little things.

I think when i either go back to Fla or Ny I am going to look into this more. Try to find a gym of this sort. Im done with the mainstream glamour gyms. I actually hate them.

Re: Powerlifting..what brought you to it?

definitely a power gym is a much better place to lift. maybe not all the machines but good heavy steel. i worked out in this 1 place outside beale afb that had a raised deadlift platform and a bucket of chalk. it was a great atmosphere

My last post had a little humor mixed in. But in all seriousness this is another big reason I'm "into" it far more than I'm "into" bodybuilding. The overall attitude and atmosphere/mindset just fits me better.
