    computer problems

For all you computer savy peeps out there.....I need some help.

About a week ago I got a new battery for my laptop as my old battery was just draining way too fast. Ever since then, whenever i close the lid on my laptop it shuts it down. I went to my power settings at made sure they were set to "do nothing" but it still happens. Any suggestions?

    Re: computer problems

Thats weird... a battery should not affect your settings like that and it should follow the protocol you have set there. Sometimes on certain PC's there is a 2nd set of software built in to the computer that is like a "power center" which could override the settings you have put on your OS. I have this on an ACER that i own so i set them both to be identical.

Unless your new battery has some switch on it that disconnects it power to the computer when you close this lid... which would be weird also. IDK man you can always check the manufacturers website or do a search on google to see if there are any computer forums that have a good answer for you.

^^^ Agree, I'd check for ancillary software settings. There's also multiple levels of setting in the power options.
Dumb question, but I assume you've tried the battery without the power plugged in and it works?

    Re: computer problems

Is your replacement battery original or did you get some Chinese knockoff on Ebay? I know that my last laptop had a similar problem. Apparently, the original batteries have an ID built into them that the laptop recognizes as OEM. If you have a knock-off, maybe it's preventing you from accessing some Windows power management features.

    Just a thought.

Should have an obvious name like "power center" or "power manager" usually embedded by the company who made the laptop so it could be under their name like Acer or Lenovo or Gateway or HP or whatever

whats ur laptop model # and who makes it? along with the battery u bought? gotta Google to see if that battery might effect how it runs, as well as see if there are any know issues pairing the 2 together, unless its oem?

is it a knock off as suggested before? or original battery replacement?

ok, well there has to be an issue with a setting, either
    1. there is a setting telling it to not go into stand by mode, which is what im thinking due to it turning off when screen is closed

    2. check the monitor settings for any sleep modes it may have

    3. check the computers sleep mode to see if it is set to an instant off type setting,'

    4. check the battery saving modes there might be a battery save mode where it turns the monitor off when the batter is not being used or something like that?

it has to be a battery, sleep or power consumption mode setting that is tweaked?

correct! I'm running windows 7. I just created a custom power plan. i have the settings for close lid to "do nothing" on both plugged in and not. I have sleep set to "never". i have no idea why it's doing this.

Could it be something with the BIOS???

i wouldnt think so as with the old battery it was sleeping when u closed the lid correct? it might be the battery? maybe it has a safety that shuts it off when it is no longer required to power the computer? im kind of at a loss with this one now, if u have the old battery throw it in and see if anything changes?

    Re: computer problems

This is gonna sound like a stupid idea but it stems from the fact that the battery may be a knock off. Set the laptop on the lid. Like with the keyboard in the air. Then shut it and try and do it softly. Still turn off? If you can't tell open it without turning it over.
