    Adding size vs being lean

Hi guys. I have been thinking about this question since being measure last Friday and I realize I have to make a decision.

I have to decide whether my goal is getting leaner while maintaining the most mass (but understanding I may lose some in the process) or growing.

Unlike many here I was not a bodybuilder in my youth. I did not seriously start working out until my late 30's and did not start hrt / trt until I was 45 (almost 2 years ago).

Right now I have come down on the side of building mass (size).

On last Friday my guns measure 17". This is an all time record for me and I am pretty excited about it. However, I will admit my diet is not perfect so along with my 3/4 inch gun increase in the last 3 months my waist line also went up by 1/2 inch.

At the end of the day I'm happy with my results. Now I have set my sites on reaching 18" guns in the next 6 months.

What would say is most important to you. More size or being lean?

You can do both and it is a simple function of diet.

How about some stats and a diet that you are using?

    Pics may help too.

Re: Adding size vs being lean

My body type has always been ecto. I can raise my daily caloric intake from 1000 to 5000 in a couple days time and not gain much fat. My job is very intense and demanding (some days, some not), and I probably burn more calories at work than in the gym. So lean bulks have never done much for me as Calculating my TEE requires rocket science. )

You have to decide what you want to look like someday (not next week), and then ask yourself how you plan to get there. In my opinion, a non "lean bulk" should be done at least once in your lifetime, I see too many people trying to gain size and stay relatively lean only to spin their wheels and not get many results.

Unless you are competing, try it out, focus on gaining as muscle muscle and weight you can in a years time. You wont be shredded, but you can slowly diet down a year later and in my opinion you will keep more muscle than that of a lean bulk. The guys with the highest BF percentages also have the highest LBM percentages. (1) Anyone can diet down for a show, but unless you have the LBM there already, you will just look like Justin Bieber. It takes someone really motivated to pound down meal after meal for a years time or more. Keep up with morning cardio once or twice a week to keep from looking like jabba the hut, and only eat enough to gain 1-1.5lbs/week.

I'm not saying this is for everyone, because it's really not. Some of you guys will want to stay lean year round, and that's great if you can do it. Some guys may have to stay lean because of their jobs (strippers, pornstars, etc..) But if you really want to get bigger, massive amounts of food and heavy ass weights (heavier each week) will do it faster than a lean bulk.

    Good luck and stay focused.

Yes POB....I am in line with your thinking.

For me it's I've thought about either gaining size or cutting fat. And, currently gaining size.

I was unaware so many subscribed to gaining size while becoming leaner.

i have tried to slim down and get lean, BUT always seem to grow big in muscle and could never lean down no matter what i did, diet and hard work out's, i have always ate proper diets, and thought with that and hard core work outs and cardio i would get lean, but my body just wants to grow all the time, it must just be my genetics. it sucks, but most guys want to get big and i want to grow small. lol so i guess i have no choice but to just get big. it is frustrating but i'll just deal with it, i have never been a smaller (beach type ) of guy, heck i work out my legs hard and with in 3 weeks i have to go buy more sweats, jeans dont work anymore, so i try not to work my legs to the max anymore like 550 to 600 lbs on leg press and so on, but i'm now realizing that i'm just a guy that's meant to be big. i want to say that suck's but i wont.

Never get fat to say you're bigger. Leaner and smaller is a better look than fat and big. Most guys in the general population can pull off a bigger chubby look but it not impressive. Think I'm wrong, go thought UG and show me all the guys doing a bulk that have their shirts off. Few and far in between.

And no, you can't do both at some point. You can add all the fat in the world and get to 500 lbs, not the same for muscle. Separate the two in your head.
