    Blood work fasted

I'm just curious; how many of you fast before getting blood drawn? If I'm just getting Test/E2 I usually skip the fasting.

    What do you do?

    Re: Blood work fasted

Fasting shouldn't affect hormone panels. Some recommend brief fasting if the workup includes progesterone but it's not really necessary.

Interestingly, the effect of fasting on lipid panels is currently under scrutiny. A recent study (can't post links yet, but cite is Arch Intern Med. 2012;172(22):1705-1706) found that fasting has a minimal effect (less than 2%) on total and HDL levels. So maybe someday soon (after studies correlate nonfasting baselines with disease, rather than fasting baselines), non-fasting may become the norm.

That's a great question, they say fast, I have never (BUT) I think I will next time, see if anything changes. But they do say fast, I think 12 hours??? Can't hurt.

    Re: Blood work fasted

I usually try to get blood drawn in the mornings, so I am fasted. If I don't make it to the lab early enough I go ahead and eat. Never seen an effect on hormone panel.
You would think it would make a difference on lipids. Since a full work up is always done at my DR I always fast. I'm scared that crazy bastard would have me on BP and cholesterol meds if I ate breakfast before drawing blood.lol
