Do most female athletes follow some weight lifting program to look so fit and toned? Or is it mostly cardio and diet?

So I was just checking out some of the best female volleyball players, they look so lean and athletic. I have a few overweight female friends who ask me for advice but i don't know if i should recommend bodybuilding programs, or circuit training, or just cardio and dieting. Will lifting weights cause muscular bodies on women or is that for the genetic elite etc?

Volleyball players are just skinny with slight muscles. Girls that do powerlifting (2 of them going to the gym where I do) look significantly more muscular (bit tinier, but close to the one that Yano sent).
As for volleyball, as there's a team here, they just run and train standardly, mostly cardio and technique for ball accuracy.
