After a shoulder injury I returned to the gym a few weeks ago and I have been experiencing headaches while finishing up my squats. In the past I would sometimes feel just a bit dizzy after a heavy set but this is the first time I have even had actual headaches. Is it something to be concerned about or just push through?

What's your blood pressure like? Do you have high heart rate after finishing a set?
Have not checked my BP in a while, it typically runs a bit lower than normal. I didn't check my HR, but I didn't feel like my heart was pumping unusually hard.

These are the only things I can think of. Elevated BP and heart rate can lead to a headache. Not saying it's your issue, just something to monitor closely while you try to figure this out.

I can easily watch the HR, I'll get a BP thingy. Can't hurt to have one, thanks @Send0 .

Sheesh, I blacked out while squatting fasted during an early morning workout. I never did fasted weight lifting again and bitched out my doctor for giving me horrible advice to lift weights fasted. Blacking out with 365 pounds (on my way up to my 405 pound working sets) on my back could have been a disaster. At least I was in the rack with the safety pins set.

Fasted cardio, sure, I can do that. Fasted lifting when I was into powerlifting at the time? HELL NO!

My guess would be blood pressure or even something as simple as holding your breath to brace your core can cause the headaches.

It might be your breathing, holding air in to high up in you chest is not good, breath with your belly.

Typically I do take a deep breath, hold it to the bottom, then release it slowly as I rise. I do use a tight weight belt. This has always worked for me in years past, should I rethink it? My trainer years ago told me to take the breath and stay tight going down, and if I release the air at the bottom I won't be able to come back up.

Are you resetting your breath at the top for each rep.

We take a belly full and hold up all the way down and up, releasing it coming up would crush us folding us over.

Taking a breath to high up in your chest will effect your brain.

That will get you squished doing what I do .... Breathe , brace , squat .. back back back back ,, GO !!

one breath.

I know this isnt the topic but ,, think of yourself as a cylinder , you pull as much air as you can into your belly and brace out ,, not just forward and it does take some practice , but you want to fill your belt , front back sides get yourself full of air down low as you can .. brace it out and fill the belt

now braced and with all that air ,, you as the cylinder are much harder to compress ... full vs empty soda can ,, you can stand on a full one ,, not on an empty ,, why ? internal pressure

I used to have that when doing heavy squats and even more so with heavy dumbell sholder press. It felt like my head was going to explode.
I"d say if it happen when you haven't lifted tons of iron, then you have something to be concerned about.

Keep it up bro. It's the price we pay to get big. It's better than eating potato chips watching tv.
