I have been trying to find an accurate way to gauge my body fart percentage, less because of the exact number and more because if I can find a consistent way to measure it, I can objectively gauge progress. A scale is not useful for obvious reasons, and my waist measurements have gone down so that's good. I tried the various online calculators that use various body measurements, and for the most part they came up with 10% to 15%. I didn't believe that because when I look at the various reference pictures, I don't have anywhere near the definition in those pics. I found a free app that estimates it, and it said 17.4% which looked more realistic.

Today I went to a fitness center run my the local medical university and they hooked me up to their InBody 570 machine (I can't find a Dexa or BodPod anywhere near me). That came up 11.3%. I have attached it, would be interested in comments. Later this evening my GF will take some pics of me and I'll post those. I would appreciate thoughts. Thanks guys!

I mean it's based on bioimpedance. So it's pretty much garbage as far as body analysis goes.

I just go off the mirror, followed by the scale. If both are trending in the direction I want then I don't change anything. If things aren't to my liking then I change diet, training, or both.

With that said, you look leanish. I hope you stop cutting weight soon. You really don't have mass that you can afford to lose.

Bioimpedance scales are inaccurate. Sorry.

Yeah I know, it was the first thing I said to the woman who operates it. But I was there so I figured what the heck.

I had a few inbody scans done because my old gym offered them for free. They were pretty much bullshit though for me, not even tracking my changes well.

I do see a lot of loose skin around my belly. Could that be hiding thew abs, or is there just still a bunch of fat there?

Its terrible on my lower back. Going to have to get that chopped off...

That is making it hard to tell. You must have lost a bunch of weight huh? Good job!

Thanks, and I did, but it was years ago. I was fairly lean pre-covid, then I went up in body fat. Post Covid I took some of it off, more recently a bunch more, but... Skin rebelled.

I found out firsthand. I had the same exact machine tell me that I lost 10 lbs of muscle and gain 10 lbs of fat one day to the next. Never bothered using one again, even if free.

I know BIA has its limitations, for sure. I'm sure the ones people stand on that just sense through feet are crap. The more sophisticated ones might be a little better. I actually read the manual for the eVolt 360, and the operator is supposed to have the test subject fast for 4 hours before the scan, and drink 2 cups of water 2 hours before the scan.

I would bet good money the operators either don't know this or don't tell their clients. I wonder how much results would improve if people used the equipment correctly.

I know it will never rival DEXA and even DEXA has a, I think, 4% error rate? So other than an autopsy there is not going to be a very accurate test. I would settle for consistent and repeatable within several percent though.

I finally found a DEXA place near me. They want $150 for a single scan. That's not gonna happen. I did find out I can buy a refurbished DEXA scanner for from $30k to $50k, and the vendor even finances! Maybe I'll start a body scanning business :-)

For the fun of it, I had another scan done with an eVolt 360, very similar to the InBody 570. This scan, done less than a week later, reported a body fat percentage of 18.9%. Great stuff!

I found a medical imaging company that will do a DEXA for $75 if I self pay, but they require a doctor to order it. I talked my doctor into placing the order as a bone density scan (which seems to be the same thing). The office called and wanted me to schedule it, and I asked them how much. They referred me to the billing department.

I spoke with the billing department. After a very long discussion about my insurance, the scan may or may not be covered. I was not looking for that, I just wanted to know what it costs if I am not insured. The answer is $517!!!

So the same scan done at one place is $150 self pay, at another place its $75 self pay and at the lab associated with the doctor, $517. The difference, insurance is being billed the $517. Another example of why health insurance costs so much.

Your definitely lower than 18.9% BF.

Thanks for the conformation, I thought so. I also doubt I have anywhere near that much visceral fat, and I know my waist is 28 inches, not 32.1. I have no idea how it would calculate my waist, because I didn't tell it.

I like number from the first one (11.3% BF) much better ;-)

Seriously, the 11.3% is probably a bit low but much closer. The InBody device also correctly knew my arms are very lean, my legs have a bit of fat and my torso has more fat. Maybe it just made a lucky guess, I'm not going to argue these things actually work.

Both eVolt and InBody claim there devices are within like 2% of DEXA, yet they are 7.6% apart. Hilarious.

I would put you between 11-13%... But it's not like. I think the first test is closer to reality, even though it basically made a lucky guess.
