Hey all! I'm 57 years old, 6'1" and 220lbs. & have been blessed with average fitness my whole life, primarily lacking upper body strength. I've been into running for a few years & competed in 6k & half marathons a few times, but cut way back a few years ago when my excessive activity (3-5 miles daily) started affecting my knees... specifically one knee that I injured 20+ years ago. I could tell that running was starting to do more damage than benefit. At the same time, I changed jobs & became a LOT more sedentary. Combine that with bad eating habits & over the last 4 years I've created an impressive little "dad bod" belly.

Two months ago, on my birthday, I committed myself to get back in shape in a way that doesn't kill my joints and leave me worse off. I also look at my own father, who just didn't give a damn his whole life & is easily on the obese side and now suffering from a variety of health issues and no energy. Yeah, I don't want to go down that road.

I joined a gym, hired a trainer, really started watching my diet, and got a physical (including a blood test). It was suggested that I look into TRT, and I did, and have been taking it for 5 weeks now with some pretty good results. I work out 3 days a week for at least an hour and put a lot of effort into the program. Plus I try to stay active more on my "off" days. I know it's early, but I've been encouraged by noticeable results, and I intend to continue this indefinitely as a way to build and maintain a decent level of fitness and shape.

Being an older guy with no prior bodybuilding experience (although I have had formal fitness training many years ago associated with my job) this is a new area to me & I feel quite lacking in knowledge. It's my hope to change that by spending more time reading & learning from you here.

I'm also 58. Started training early 80s. No research available but muscle and fitness/flex magazines to read. That was mostly bs articles anyway.

Today you have places like this and utube. Mostly bs there too.

Research in the old days was watching what the big fuckers did and duplicate it. Talking with other guys in the gym. Hanging out with them and learning from one another as comrades of iron.

I miss those days when the only thing guys had in their ears was wax and dirt. The only thing they had in their hands were towels. No phones. No pencil neck know it alls.

Good luck with the research. Believe nothing you read and only half of what you see.

welcome to ugbb. 58 and time to rock, heavy is not a good thing at our ages, just consistent motivation. Right Snake, and a few others on here.

Thanks! I've been working with a buddy from high school who is a trainer at a local gym, and he warns me of the same thing, while also teaching me proper form. If I can increase my overall fitness and avoid injury, I'll consider it a win!
