I'm eighteen, senior in HS. I just finished a hypertrophy block and wrestling season, and have done three sports for about ten months out of the year for the last few years. I love lifting more than any of my school sports however, and think I'm probably not gonna do track so I can have more time to lift and run. I weigh 185 lbs, am 5'9" and am running 5/3/1 now (two weeks in). SBD are 335, 265, 385, so not bad, but hopefully will improve a lot. Going to West Point next year and need to get better at running, if any of you big dudes have thoughts on improving as big strong guys, I'd appreciate that. Looking forward to learning more here...

Your numbers are pretty good considering your age and weight. Some guys don't hit that until their early 20s. It all comes down to dedication

I don't know if I fall into the big boy category, but I can give you some fatherly advice.

Use your weight training to supply your sports. I wouldn't forego your season of track just to lift weights. Trust me, the weights will be waiting for you long after the sports are gone

Sincerely,
A man with four good young men

Your baseline strength is good. At some point, more mass, even good, will hinder your sport (running)

What do you run? If you’re short distance, you may benefit some from building up legs with more focus, but also do it in a sport specific way. I know sprinters need some upper body mass for arm drive and all that jazz, but I’d bet you’re probably already good enough there.

I’m far from well versed in any track and field stuff, so take what I say with a grain of salt minus training for your sport.

Welcome to the forum.

If I were to do track, I'd want to throw shotput cause I could be varsity for that. The kind of running I need to do is long-distance, not sprints, by the way.

Just an update: am doing track, throwing shotput.
I'm pretty good for my first year. As far as lifts, I just maxed again on squat and bench.
Squat 355, Bench 295, so I feel real good about that.

I would still do track. Look for a 2 mile run program. Look at the max (13:30 I think ) and stay on that plan. You going to west point will give you plenty of time to prepare. Do what you enjoy now because you soon will do more of what they want you to do than what you want to do.
*did 25 retired before it got too bad.
