Back in 1986, when I started body building, I had the good fortune of training in the same gym as these two Pros. Can you name them?

Watching these guys, I learned a lot about training. Talking with them taught me a lot about life.

The second guy, after I won the state title in my weight class said to me...

"Son, you have a good physique and you seem like a smart kid too. Listen to me, don't waste your life trying to be a Pro body builder. You'll never earn a decent living doing that."

That was very hard to hear especially at the age of 21 years old from an honest to goodness pro like this fellow. I wanted to chalk it up to him being "over the hill" and "past his prime" and jealous of me since I was "an up and coming" competitor.

Today, I am very glad I listened to him.

Sometimes, your harshest critics are being honest and give us a truth we don't want to acknowledge.

I was younger, like you. after the military, started lifting at a gym ran by joe corsi in hayward. old school. lot of big boys back then. he approached me about helping out at the gym, helping some of the guys train. Said he'd pay me, and give me a place to sleep down stairs in the basement. At first, this sounded pretty cool, so I asked to see the room down stairs in the basement. He said he was still "working on it". He was hanging up some partitions with doors. There was also a group shower in the basement. So we started talking. Somehow the conversation of oral sex came up, and how i felt about it. Confused, he said that oral sex wasn't really sex, as it's just a way for guys to blow off some steam. A little shocked, I told him I'll "think abouut it" and left.

This is like the best advise I NEVER took.

Too bad too, because it was an awesome gym at the time, back in the early 80's.

Good guess but no. Those guys are not related to one another and not the Weiders.

EDIT: Not Paul.

HINT: One of them has a very successful equipment company now.

No but good guess! Right around the same time frame for both of those guys! Although I will say that the guy in the first pic had a training style a lot like Mike Mentzer! He also shared some some strong similarities to Mentzer in physique - both very powerful and round muscle bellies although somewhat blocky.

Okay I'll tell ya...

The first guy is Casey Viator and the second guy is Boyer Coe.

Both guys where just absolutely the most enjoyable folks to be around! Full of positive supporting words, great big personalities and never ever missed a chance to help a young kid in a "teaching moment."

Boyer was the reason I put so much into my training in the early days. As a 16 year old kid, I wanted to emulate his physique so I tried to copy everything he did.

I don't have any "direct" proof he should be on the list. He may have simply been impartial to what was going on at his gym, I don't know. But his gym was a quarter mile from the brew pub I used to hang out at and play darts. And it was the biggest/best gym in town at the time.

But his comments were enough to scare me from coming back.

Damn, I should have know those. I'm sure I have a Flex or muscle & Fitness mag up in my dads attic with those guys profiled.

I actually think I heard that Jack Lalane and Corsi spent a lot of time together.... that's another red flag....

yer starting to date yerself!

My dad had a buddy that knew Lalanne. Evidently Lalanne was a supply specialist during WW2, and "somehow" saved up enough "proceeds" to come home and I believe open up a gym. Or that's the story my old man tells anyways.

I'm not even sure Corsi is still alive or not. That was 30 years ago, and he was no spring chicken back then. But the casual way he was telling me what he told me gave me the impression he believed what he was saying, that is was merely a way for blokes to blow off steam.

(Sorry for the hijack Cashout!)

Hell, I wasn't even close.... I would have never guessed Boyer Coe.... maybe Casey Viator eventually.... helluva way to get started Cash.

Respect,

Thanks for the links....watching that tribute just makes me flash back to be 16 years old and riding my 20 inch Diamondback BMX bike 4 miles to the gym at 4:45 every week day morning before high school just so I could be in the gym at 5 am when Boyer trained.

It was such a treasure to just be around the guy. He always remembered my name and always spoke to me first. He gave me so much sound advice and really challenged me to focus on what my goals where and how I planed on getting there. He was my first "strategy" teacher.

True giant in body building for sure.
