Hey, everyone. I wanted to share a little story. I had a freak accident while playing volleyball in my driveway with my daughter, and I ended up tearing my Achilles tendon. I wasn't even playing hard. I had to undergo surgery to re-attach it, and the six weeks that followed were tough. I had to use crutches and walking devices with a boot and couldn't walk appropriately during that time. It was tough because I lost motivation to work out, eat healthy, clean my house, and even see people.

Finally, I was able to take the boot off and return to the gym, even though I still had to limp to the exercise machines. I've been going through physical therapy, but my injured leg still has zero power or stability, which is why I still limp. However, I'm feeling much better now. Walking is great.

Hope it comes back brother. Yeah walking is great. I do a little 1.6 mile walk M-F. It's good for the body and mind.

I have a bro science theory about Zone 1-3 cardio directly burning body fat while not in a fasted state.

Glycogen (“carbs”, but not really) is likely being preserved in the muscles for times when they are actually needed, say sprints or heavy lifting. Zone 1-3 are so low heart rate and such low stimuli to any muscle, that using glycogen as an energy source likely isn’t justified.

More theory: I’d bet it’s actually a preservation/survival mechanism - imagine we are hunter gatherers for a minute. Why would your body use up it’s optimal energy source for non-life threatening tasks like walking - when a saber tooth tiger can jump out at you any minute? You’d need to sprint away from this thing, but wait - your body already burnt up it’s optimal fuel source for intense physical output…

Why would you hit the NOS button on a racecar when you’re not trying to race anyone?

Figured I'd add onto the walking bandwagon of love.

Our bodies are ALWAYS burning both fats and carbs, 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Not just muscles, but organs, too.

In terms of the muscles, it's a spectrum. It's never one or the other, it's always both, but as the demands and/or duration increase, the ratio of carbs vs fats burned for fuel changes.

I doubt we have any reliable way to tell how much of our energy consumption comes from glycogen stores vs fat stores, but sure.

I'm saying that I think a lot of people have seen better fat loss when doing LISS than HIIT, and I would argue this is because our bodies preserve glycogen for times of need... walking is not a time of rapid energy need.

It can absolutely be done in a lab

It comes down to overall calories burned in a day. Calories in vs out equated, it'll be the same outcome whether one does HIIT or LISS.

I used to think this way, but I don't anymore.
Nutrient partitioning is a thing.

I don't care to debate it, I just think that CICO is not as applicable to people like us, and that using energy sources for their intended purpose - lends itself to better results than otherwise. It's fine if you disagree, just putting my opinion out there.

It is, but you're only accounting for the time that one is doing cardio. You're neglecting what happens during the rest of the day.

CICO applies to everyone equally. It's physics, it's not debatable. It's not my opinion, it's fact. Otherwise energy would have to somehow spontaneously be created or destroyed, as calories are simply a measure of energy.

And sometimes it's just nice to take a walk.

Yeah, for me l like to do it for mental enjoyment more than anything else. Any physical benefits are a bonus.

Hey there,

Wow, tearing your Achilles tendon must've been quite a shock, especially during a laid-back game of volleyball. It's totally normal that the recovery process has been a rollercoaster, both physically and emotionally.
Getting back to the gym and starting physical therapy are big steps forward. It's okay if your injured leg feels a bit wobbly at first. With time and dedication, you'll definitely regain that strength and stability.

Just remember to take it easy on yourself, celebrate every little victory, and keep that positive mindset going. You're making progress, and that's what counts!

@CJ @Texasgator2021 had either of you had ankle/foot/tendon pain prior to?

My knees, ankles, and feet have felt amazing since I started walking barefoot as much as possible

No, I'm not a goddam hippie, I wear shoes in public. But at home, in the yard, I go barefoot. It strengthens all the muscles of the feet and ankle area not having a shoe to support and cushion your feet.
