Hi all,

I am late 40s and been going to local gym using resistance machines for about four months.

I am 5 ft 7 and chest press at about 55Kg so not huge

Goal = build home gym and build some muscle and stay strong and healthy as enter my 50s.

I have read around and free weights seem much better than resistance machines I have been using and so i will start using free weights at low weight to start and work on technique and form.

So I have an office which means I have some constraints when considering a rack, rubber mat and a barbell:
- limited space so folding or compact rack or half rack would suffice
- interior walls with large windows so wall mounted is not feasible

Are there any good online shops ship to UK? currently looked at Fitness Superstore and The GymRevolution
Are there any good threads/resources on here about home gym equipment?

I have currently considered the following and will probably use a 6ft barbell that can act as a 7ft barbell
ATX Half Rack HRX-660 - compact

Powertec Workbench Half Rack - bit bigger

Pro Clubline SPR500- bit bigger
Body Power Deluxe Folding Power Rack - limed capacity 135Kg, will I surpass this?

Also, if I stick thick rubber mat onto wooden floor will the floor get wrecked anyway?

Apologies for long post but wanted to give a full picture
Thanks
Bob

If space is truly at a premium, you could go with individual squat/bench stands. They are not as safe as a normal rack, but for space saving and portability, they're good.

Thanks for the quick reply - yes that could be an option, I will take a look.

I went onto another forum and people saying you must have 24 inch spotter/safety thing etc.

Amazon has tons of equipment for the uk dude. Type in power rack, buy a bar and a bench with some plates and you are good to go. I priced it with like 400lb plates for around £1000

I bet a few months after this pandemic subsides, you'll find great deals on equipment from people selling what they bought recently.

I'd hold off on anything unnecessary until then.

Haha yes this has crossed my mind, I have actually ordered a bench and some dumbbells and I'll start with that for now but I ordered a week ago and all sold out everywhere now.

I want to continue doing my research though so i know what I am looking for when the time is right.

Any good resources for dumbbell only workouts?

Just ordered some Olympic dumbbell handles and plates, borrowed a bench and barbell so I’m good. Would be nice to have an adjustable stand for squating and benching, will see if I can find something cheap. People are buying up everything lots of stuff is sold out and they’re starting to price gouge a bit. Prob going sell once I’m back to the gym tho.

PLUS I just received my set of resistance bands. I have limited space also. my shed.
I have a bs bench with a handful of weights and just ordered the bands plus the pice pictured below and I should be good.
I've never used bands before but now im forced to try and to be hones im pretty excited...may hit me different than weights and a change is good sometimes to keep things fresh and progressing.

PRx makes some pretty good home workouts set ups. I couldn’t find if they ship internationally or not.
